SURVEY - Staff ID Badges in Libraries
1. Does your library use staff ID badges? Yes
2. How long have they been in use? We have used badges for about 2-3 years.
3. What reasons precipitated the decision to use them? We had non-staff in staff areas; wanted to be able to identify staff easily, especially the shelvers; we also had patrons confused about who was staff and who to ask for help.
4. Did management consult with staff for input prior to implementing a staff ID badge policy? Yes, we have an Employee/Customer Service Committee. They surveyed the staff and looked into what kind of badges are available.
Do you feel staff concerns, if any, were addressed? The main thing staff members were concerned about was having their full name available on their badges for patrons to see and possible use to harass them.
Why or why not? We had a staff meeting and talked about this but some people did not want any type of identification but since our director wanted badges, we were getting them.
5. On average, does the library staff support the use of staff ID badges,
or is it primarily a management directive? Some of the staff support the use of badges, some still don't. It was a requirement from the director.
6. Do all library personnel wear staff ID badges, or just certain public
service positions? Which positions? All library staff are to wear badges, except the library maintenance staff, from the director to the shelvers.
7. What materials are your staff ID badges made of? We have plastic badges with three different ways to attach them to your clothing; magnetic, pin, or cord around your neck.
8. Do they feature a photo? Do you have the option to change the
photo/replace the staff ID badge over time? We do not have photo's on our tags. We seem to reorder badges every year or so and you can reorder new ones at that time.
9. Do they display your last name? If so, is this mandatory? Are you
uncomfortable with the idea of revealing this information on a public staff
ID badge? You do not need to have your name on the badge. This was a major concern for many staff members.
10. Do you have the option of printing your preferred mode of address on
your staff ID badge, if other than your given name? People can chose what is on their badge, either their name, the word STAFF or LIBRARIAN or Shelver.
11. Does your staff ID badge list your job title? Depends. I am the Librarian in charge of the branches and the media department which are part of what we call Adult Services. I need to give my name to anyone who has concerns with my departments. Therefore I have my first and last name listed, along with my department and partial title. My badge has the City of Duluth logo on the right and then the words
Duluth Public Library
City Logo Renee Zurn (in larger letters)
Adult Services Librarian
The Director's badge gives her full name and the word Director.
Some just have the word Librarian.
12. Is it a mandatory policy to wear the staff ID badge? Is any
disciplinary action enforced for not wearing it? It is mandatory to wear the badges but it is not enforced.
13. Have you noted any patron reactions to the use of staff ID badges? If
so, what sort of reactions? I have not noticed any patron reaction.
14. Do you think library personnel should wear staff ID badges? Why or why not? Yes I do. I think you should wear a badge all day, every day. I am not a Librarian only when on the desk but am a professional no matter where I am in the library. I can not ignore patrons in the stacks that ask me for help as I walk past or as I am working in the stacks. I clearly identifies myself to the public so they will feel comfortable approaching a stranger with a question.
15. What type of library do you work in: public, academic, or other?
I work in a public library.
16. This survey has been cross-posted to several mailing lists. From which
mailing list did you obtain your copy?
Fiction L
17. Do you have any comments on this topic not addressed by the above
survey? I have not had any staff member report any negative contact with the public since we started wearing badges.
18. May we quote your responses in an article on the use of staff ID badges
in libraries? Do you wish to remain anonymous, or have your name cited? Yes you may quote me and cite my name.
