Yelp! I have a patron who is looking for a book she remembers reading
from about 20-30 years ago. This is what she remembers.
It is about a strong pioneer woman who travels across the United States.
She marries about 4-5 times, has about 10 kids not all of whom survive.
One episode from the book, in particular, stands out in her mind.
A woman, not the main protagonist, is sleeping in her cabin with her
husband when she feels something along her leg. At first she thinks it is
her husband, but soon realizes it is not her husband but a snake in bed
with her. Apparently, snakes hibernated(?) under the cabin, but the
warmth from the fire awoke them and they invaded her house, specifically
her bedroom. The husband tries to get up and get out, but finds the room
full of snakes, gets bitten and dies. Her screams are heard from far away
and people come to rescue her and get her out by cutting a hole in the
ceiling. She is never quite right after this.
Anyone recognize that episode? Thanks for any suggestions.
