I have a patron who wants a book she read "several" years ago--maybe 15?
It is a novel, a thick book, about the San Francisco Public Library and has
alternating chapters of the history of California. I tried Novelist, but
the number of hits was over-whelming!

(I hate to admit it, but I think I read this one too, and I can't come up
with a better description than the patron!)

Perhaps this is Land's End by Kevin Starr, California State Librarian, former SF librarian. Jacket says, "interwoven with the 19th c. narrative is the contemporary story of James Norton, scholar, reluctant SF city official..." Pub date is 1979.
