Maybe HOLIDAYS IN HELL by P.J. O'Rourke? As I recall, several of the
pieces in that book (though not all of them) first appeared in
ROLLING STONE.

O'Rourke is, shall we say, not at all Politically Correct, but at
his best (as in much of this book) he is extremely funny....

Sounds like PJ O'Rourke to me, too. If your reader enjoys Holidays in
Hell, s/he might also like ALL THE TROUBLE IN THE WORLD, another (sort of)
travelogue by the irrepressibly irreverent Mr. O'Rourke. Some of these
pieces were originally done for RS, too.

P.J. O'Rourke has and does write for Rolling Stone. He published a book of
humorous travel writings called _Holidays in Hell_ (c1988). Could this be
it?

writer from Rolling Stone mag. who then went on to write a book(s). The
