My supervisor has asked me to investigate the possibility of a reader's
review board in our library. This would be some way our patrons could post
reviews of books they liked for others to read.

Is anybody out there doing something like this? If so, how does it work?
Do you have staff monitoring what is posted and for how long? How much
staff time is involved? We were also thinking of just keeping a notebook
for interested readers to browse.

I sure would appreciate any input.

Our library does two kind of similar things, one in the Adult Department
and one in the YA/Children's Department. In the Adult Services
Department,
we have the Reader's Choice awards which is a year-long process. The
first
stage involves patrons nominating favorite titles. After titles are
nominated,
Reader's Choice Readers (patrons active in the library's discussion
groups or
people who have expressed an interest) read the books and narrow the
list
down to 10 books. Those ten books are then voted on by the library
patrons and
staff until a favorite is chosen (I know this is very confusing, if you
need more details
just ask). All the books have stickers on the spine saying
Reader's Choice Nominee, and the books are used in displays. The
Library
also does some PR (cable access, displays, newsletter, etc.) for this.
This
really isn't very time-consuming, but it does take some organization.

On the children's side, we list reviews of books (written by children)
on the
Rebecca Caudill site (an award for YA books given within the state of
Illinois) which
our library hosts; it can be found at http://www.rebeccacaudill.org.
Our webmistress
"Diva Kelly" assures me that it takes, at the busiest period, about 5
hours a week
to post the reviews. There's very little editing done on the reviews of
the children's
stuff; however, we do edit out last names of children, etc.

Our library keeps a notebook at the Circulation Desk where patrons and
staff can write short reviews of books they have read.
