Blackbird: A childhood lost and found by Jennifer Lauck.
I'm guessing that's the same book. The description was dark and dreary -
sounded just like an Oprah pick. :) "a memoir of the six years during
which both of her parents died" It was published in October 2000.

I have a request today from a patron who just caught the end of Oprah
yesterday, interviewing an author about a book called, "Blackbird". She
missed who the author was, how new it was etc. Said it was about a woman's
life. Any clues? Thanks, Jeanne

I strongly suspect that the title your patron is thinking of is Blackbird: A
Childhood Lost and Found by Jennifer Lauck. Found via dogpile.com. I don't
know for sure that it's the Oprah choice, but it is about a child surviving a
dysfunctional, fractured family existence.
If not - your patron might want to read it anyway - it got stellar reviews.
Hope this helps.

I believe this is it. A very interesting read. I would like to know more
about her. To me, the book ends too soon in her life..

Could this be the title your patron is seeking?
The Will to Survive - By the time she was 10 years old, Jennifer had lost
both of her parents. Then her guardian abandoned her at a church commune.
She shares stories of her tormented childhood and unshakable will to live in
Blackbird: A Childhood Lost and Found.
