A fellow staff member is looking for a science fiction story about an
oil spill. Scientists develop a form a bacteria which is supposed to eat
the oil but instead, attacks plastic. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

There is an older title (1972) entitled Mutant 59: The Plastic Eaters
by Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis.

I am pretty sure the title of this book is Ill Wind by Kevin J.
Anderson.
