North Carolina author Manly Wade Wellman's books frequently have a strong
mountain tinge to the narration. I am most familiar with his
supernatural-tinged work and all the Silver John stories and novels feature
this, in addition to often featuring folk songs. There are the collections
WHO FEARS THE DEVIL and VALLEY SO LOW (other stories in addition to John)
and the novels such as AFTER DARK, THE OLD GODS WAKEN and THE HANGING
STONES. He also has a Si-Fi tinged one, THE BEYONDERS. He has also
written a number of adult and juvenile southern historical novels, many of
which are probably (unfortunately) OP.

I would include Harriette Arnow's books, the best known of which is The
Dollmaker.
