Do any of you have experience in producing library newsletters. If so, can
you give me some pointers, or would you be willing to mail one to me? If
any of you put your newsletters on your library web page, I would love to
know that also.
Thank you.

I basically use the newletter for a monthly column that goes in the local
paper...so it servers two purposes. We do mail it to the Library Board
Members and the local officals - such as commissioners.
Excuse mis-spelled words and bad sentence structure...end of a long week
and I am very tired.

Our library has a monthly newsletter that is quite detailed with
information about what is going on in the library, staff and volunteer
of the month, and other tidbits of information. There is also a
monthly book review column that is done by moi and a colleague.
Lately I have been doing them all as she is too busy but I cut time by
doing "Readalike" lists e/o month. The business office assistant
organizes the information and the printing costs are paid by the
Friends of the Library. They mail them to Friends' members and are
also available in the Library and branch. You can view the newsletter
at http://www.open.org/~library/news.html . I would also be happy to
mail you a couple of paper copies so you could see the format. If we
wait a week or two I can send you the February issue that will have my
"Staff & Patron Choices for 2000." :-))

The first is a four page folded affair reproduced in-house on our
photocopier onto colored paper. It is issued monthly and features
exclusively adult/family programs (as opposed to children's programs). It
is distributed pretty much exclusively in-house and at a couple of select
locations around town. It is basically a glorified events calendar, with
articles/press releases about coming films, book discussions, lectures,
etc.etc.etc. It is produced by our Adult Program Coordinator, using a
simple desk-top publishing program.
Several years ago we also resurrected a second piece which had fallen by the
wayside for lack of funds -- a twice yearly piece mailed to all postal
patrons in town (this amounts to app. 11,000 addresses). I generate this,
using Microsoft Publisher, and it is printed professionally. It started as
one 8-1/2 by 14 sheet in a trifold but has recently expanded to a four page
format (all one sheet, folded). We also just went from black on a colored
stock to white with a second color ink and some photos. I concentrate on
more general PR and try to avoid time-sensitive material, as this always
winds up being out of date no matter how early I start the process. So I
feature staff changes, changes to loan policies and procedures, new formats
like books-on-CD, technology updates, news of bequests, and that kind of
thing. Yes, this is comparatively expensive to print and mail (third
class), but the Board has come to feel that it is one of the single best
things we can do to create greater community awareness and pull people in.
They are so high on the idea that they even went for the recent format
improvements, even though we had run out of community sponsors to pay for
it. And people actually read it! You can tell by the comments patrons make
when they come in.
One more tip -- the best thing that ever happened to me as newsletter editor
was getting the local senior center to volunteer to prepare the mailing for
the post office. It gets done fast, free, and I don't even have to haul all
the boxes into and out of the building. An arrangement like this saves a
LOT of time and aggravation.
I have put a copy of the most recent issue in the mail to you. We haven't
yet mounted an electronic version on our home page, but we may get to that
soon.
Good luck! In our experience, the hard work and money expended are well
worth the effort.
