Okay, this is a stretch, I know - but you've come through before! The
patron recalls reading a book in the 1960's (J or YA); author's name starts
with "A"; she remembered quite a bit of the plot. A boy is passing by a
group of boys playing football, and catches one that's thrown to him. He's
invited to be on the football team, and at the same time (?) is going to an
engineering school (possibly beginning with "B"), paid for by his uncle, who
says he can't go out for the football team because he would be competing
with his cousin. He meets a linebacker, and accepts a major award in the
name of another boy. Ring any bells? Thanks in advance!!Claudia Breland

[removed]@juno.comDon't know the book, but I believe one Joe Archibald was a prolific
writer of YA sports stories around/before that time, and since his name
starts with A, he'd be a possibility...
