Jim the Boy by Tony Early. A wonderful short novel about a young boy in
a small North Carolina town, growing up fatherless, but with 3 ornery
wonderful uncles. I don't remember whether this was the Appalachian
part of N.C. or not, though
October Sky by Homer H. Hickam. West Virginia coal mining town. More,
perhaps, of the flavor of a coal mining town, than of Appalachian
folklore, etc.
Other Lee Smith books such as my favorite: Fair and Tender Ladies, and
Saving Grace.
Michael Lee West. American Pie
Lana Witt. Slow dancing on dinosaur bones. Lively, entertaining tale
of east Kentucky folks at war with the coal barons.
Margaret Maron's mysteries: Bootlegger's Daughter; Home Fires, etc.
