I've checked the archives under 'global', 'international' and 'world' to no
avail, so I turn to you all in the flesh, so to speak. I'm interested in
collecting your suggestions of major works and authors by folks from Africa,
Mexico, China, Vietnam, Egypt, Russian, Iran, India... in other words, not
the European/North American 'dead white guys'. I'm looking for 'best of'
rather than exhaustively inclusive.
If you have recommendations of web sites or other sources for this material,
I'd be glad of that information as well. I will post to the list.
Many thanks,

I would have to recommend Jose Saramago's BLINDNESS -- one of the best books
published (anywhere in the world!) in 1998. Saramago is from Portugal.

I would think that in this instance you may want to check with a
college/university library whose holdings would include extensive foreign
language literature and reference works; also, they tend to carry subscriptions
to journals such as "World Literature Today." Here are a few sites I've found
that may be helpful --
