I am preparing a booktalking demo for our staff development day coming up in
February. The theme I've selected is Popes in fiction, and I am currently
reading Pope Joan by Donna Woolfolk Cross (excellent story!). I have The
Accidental Pope by Raymond Flynn and Robin Moore on order, and a hold on
Pope Patrick by Peter de Rosa, and there are other titles I am considering
as well. But I remember reading a review in one of the professional journals
(LJ, Publisher's Weekly, Booklist) about a new book (possibly an E-book) out
in 2000 that I cannot now find. This particular book was about an older
Chinese woman (possibly a Buddhist) who somehow was elected to be the new
Catholic Pope. I cannot for the life of me remember the title or the author,
but I seem to vaguely recall the book was due to be released only as an
E-book or perhaps first as an E-book.
Does anyone recall the title or author, or where I might find a review? I
have checked BIP, NoveList, Amazon, so far. Any suggestions would be most
helpful.
Thank you in advance,
Victoria Swadley

I'm sure you're recalling MAGNIFICAT by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, which has
been published only as an eBook by Hidden Knowledge. Strangely enough,
the publishers behind this company (Mike Ward and Karen Schaffer) are
good friends of my wife and myself (and Karen used to be our housemate).
Small world and all that. . . See the book's site at
http://www.hidden-knowledge.com/titles/magnificat/
and if you order it, tell 'em Denny sent you...
The PUBLISHERS WEEKLY story was in the May 22, 2000 issue and was
available on the website but now seems to be gone. There's also a
story from LIBRARY JOURNAL April 15, 2000 which is on the site.

No to the question about a Chinese woman etc. but...
Morris West writes a lot about popes etc. (Clowns of God, Eminence, Shoes of
the Fisherman etc.), of course Colleen McCullough's "the Thorn Birds".

Thanks also to those who suggested other titles on my subject. This is most
helpful.
