We have a patron looking for a book she read in high school, which would
have been
in the early 1970's. She said the book is a science fiction book about
the end of the
world as a result of biological warfare. She thought there was
something about the
hammer of Thor in the book. Some people survive because they have
immunity as
a result of snake bites. She thinks the word "world" might be in the
title. Does
anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

This would be EARTH ABIDES by George R. Stewart; first published in
1949 and frequently reprinted.

Hm.. mention of Thor's Hammer brought to mind Lucifer's Hammer by Larry
Niven (1977), although it was about a comet. There's a summary/review

I looked around for a book similar to what your patron is describing,
but
came up empty.
