I think to the above suggestion, I'd add Vera Caspary's "Laura," which was a
book before it was a movie.

Another book with dangerous and deadly themes is Celeste De Blasis's The
Tiger's Woman. Not to give away the plot on one of the best historical
novels ever written - but the heroine's father is one of the most creepily
deadly and dangerous characters I've ever run across.

Also, one might say that Rochester was obsessed with Jane (Jane Eyre).
Scarlett was obsessed with Ashley (GWTW). And in War and Peace, Andrei spent
half of his life obsessed by his wife's possible infidelity. Hannibal Lecter
is obseesed with eating his way through the population. And then there's
always Javert, who's obsessed with capturing the unfortunate Jean Valjean in
Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, Psyche who tries to discover what Cupid really
looks like, and no doubt, many more literary etc's.
