Our catalog lists a bunch of different non-fiction books about coffee
(cookbookish things mostly), but I am sure you have your own selection
available. As for fiction, I come up with _Black Coffee_, the recent
novelization of an Agatha Christie play by Charles Osborne; _An Aroma of
Coffee_ by Dany Laferriere; and _One Coffee With_, a mystery by Margaret
Maron. _Annie's Rainbow_ by Fern Michaels features a coffee plantation
owner and a coffeehouse operator. There is also _Coffee Will Make You Black_
by April Sinclair, a coming-of-age in the 60s story. We also have a CD from
Putumayo Records called Music from Coffee Lands, which features music from
places around the world where coffee is grown (Brazil, Africa, etc.). Might
be an interesting musical soundtrack to your gathering!

Another fiction title is Milk in My Coffee by Eric Jerome Dickey. A couple
of interesting nonfiction titles are: The Devil's Cup: Coffee, the Driving

There was that book about stewardesses - Coffee, Tea or Me. There's also a
Hercule Poirot mystery called Black Coffee, although it might not have been
written by Agatha Christie. Amazon lists one of the authors as Charles
Osborne. And I'd advise checking Amazon - there are lots of books with the
word "coffee" in the title, although most seem to be non-fiction books about
coffee itself.

Sherri,
A recent history of coffee and its effect on world culture is Uncommon
Grounds: The History of Coffee and How It Transformed Our World by Mark
Pendergrast, Basic Books, 1999. There are certainly aspects to the history of
coffee, especially with regards to the effect of demand for coffee on the
agriculture and economies of some developing countries; however, the overall
tone of the book is not an attack on coffee.
Another possiblity is Glass, Paper, Beans: Revelations on the Nature and
Value of Ordinary Things by Leah Hager Cohen, Doubleday, 1997. The author wrote
about the processes behind the things used to brew a cup of coffee, i.e growing
the beans, making glass, making paper.
And just for fun you might consider Buzz: The Science and Lore of Alcohol
and Caffeine by Stephen Braun, Oxford, 1996, which, as you might guess, talks
about the physiological effects of coffee and its influence on the culture among
other things.
