Hello

A customer would like a book he read a few years. He believes the
protagonist was Irish American, perhaps a politician or ward boss who had
an amoral character. He is shot on his doorstep at the beginning of the
book, and while he's in the hospital, he reflects upon his life.

The customer thinks the book was written in 1998 or 1999 by a prominent
American woman author who is better known for writing books with female
protagonists. The best I could come up with was "Charming Billy" by Alice
McDermott, but the customer said this was not the book.
