I have a patron insisting that one of the Amelia Peabody books by Elizabeth Peters takes place in at least part in Australia. She gave a rather detailed account of the story. Problem is, no synopsis for any of the books in this series mentions any of the things she is describing. I'm guessing she must be thinking of another book, but unless I can prove it she won't believe us.
The story is most likely set around the sam,e time as the peabody series - early 1900's. A woman goes to Australia where an aboriginal man reckognizes auras about her. A kangaroo is shown letting a joey out of the pouch. Later, she joins up with her husband, and they find a young girl whom they sort of adopt.
Is this part od the Peters series?
Is it another book anyone recognizes?

This is a guess, but your patron may have one of several books by Victoria
Holt in mind -- The Black Opal and Shadow of the Lynx may fit the bill, or,
The Dreaming by Barbara Wood. None of these fit all the specifications, but
they do fit the general description.

There is a Madeline Brent story, Golden Urchin, that has a young white girl
growing up with a nomadic tribe in the Outback, in the early 1900s. She runs
away from the tribe, find a man who was lost in the outback, saves his life
and leads him out of the desert. His wife and him adopt her. Wife dies, girl
is sent to europe to go to finishing school, a mystery develops about her
true identity, and a plot to kill her... I don't remember any kangaroo/joey
scenario.

I have read all of the Amelia Peabody series and I don't believe that any
are set, even in part, in Australia. In the Last Camel Died at Noon, Amelia
and family travel to a remote desert location where they find a "lost'
civilization. They find a young English girl there who has been brought up
to be the high priestess of Isis. The Emersons rescue her and later adopt
her as part of their family. There is no kangaroo on the cover of our copy.

Thank you all. The book she had remembered was indeed The Dreaming by Barbara Wood. She never would have believed it without proof.
