Romance audience includes "45 million women readers in North America
alone. In 1999, romance novels made up 53% of all mass-market paperback
books purchased in the United States, outselling horror, westerns, and
science fiction combined. That's more than $1 billion dollars in sales. . .
A Harlequin Enterprises survey shows their readers . . . report reading
an average of 14 romances per month. Over half of all romance readers
attended or graduated from college. . . ."
On the authors: "Once she (nearly every romance novelist is female) has
modestly established herself with a loyal readership, she'll make
$20,000 to $40,000 per novel."
The Minnesota-based authors discussed in the article are Kathleen
Woodiwiss (now living in Virginia), LaVyrle Spencer, Connie Brockway,
Betina Krahn, Kathleen Eagle, Susan Sizemore, Amelia Austin, and
Susan Johnson (of a total of 29 MN members of Romance Writers of'
America).
The article is "What Women Really Wants" by Jacquelyn B. Fletcher;
it appears in the Feb. 2000 issue of MINNESOTA MONTHLY (pp. 35-6,
116-117).
Hope whoever wanted this can still use it (but if not, the question
will come up again, so....).
