Need help identifying novel probably published before 1960's with Caroline
in the title. Patron doesn't know author. Here's what he remembers about
the plot:

A woman (Caroline) inherits a fortune from her father; doesn't marry, is a
recluse. BUT behind the scenes she changes the history of the world. She
donates anonymously to prevent a cartel of evildoers from influencing other
countries. She has a "sloven" appearance; you'd never guess she's wealthy.

Any help identifying title and/or author will be appreciated.
