Brent Monahan - The Book of Common Dread
Vampirism, skullduggery, rare-book lore, and love set in and around the
Princeton University Library. I'm rereading it now-- I recall a great climactic
chase scene in the stacks.
Matt Ruff - Fool On The Hill
Adventures and magic at a Cornell University of the mind. Among the many joys
of this novel is a scene where one character is menaced in the university
library by an inflatable doll which has been given life to murder. You'll
never look at a Rubbermaid prodct the same way again.

Opinions absolutely personal.

Similar magic can be found in the "Diana Tregarde Investigations," "SERRated
Edge," and the other Elf series by Mercedes Lackey. Her magic is most
convincing and logical, and the horror angle is so downplayed that I (who
NEVER read horror) am not at all troubled by it. Highly recommended.
