The Adult Reading Round Table of Illinois, a group of librarians dedicated
to promoting Readers' Advisory services and fiction collections in public
and school libraries, has published the ARRT GENRE FICTION LIST; A
SELF-EVALUATIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY FOR FICTION LIBRARIANS. Designed by the
steering committee as a training tool to help library staff evaluate their
knowledge of popular fiction for adults, the list will allow staff to see
where they need to focus their reading energy in order to better serve
their community. It does not cover children's or young adult fiction,
although many of the authors listed would be suitable for older teens.
The list is divided into 17 genres, with 8 of the largest genres (suspense,
romance, mystery, fantasy, etc. ) divided further into subgenres (legal
thrillers, Regency romance, etc.). Under each type of fiction there is a
brief description of the key elements and appeal characteristics of the
genre. Classic authors whose names should be immediately recognizable are
listed first, followed by popular authors-those authors that are both
representative of the genre and very popular with readers.
Price of the ARRT Genre Fiction List is $8.00, payable to the Adult Reading
Round Table, and includes postage and handling. Send orders to:
