A colleague and I were discussing compiling a senior citizen
readaloud list for book talking at nursing homes.
Book excerpts thus far have included James Herriot, All my
Patients are under the bed by Dr Camuti, The Ugliest
Pilgrim by Doris Betts and Lee Smith's Me and My baby View the
Eclipse.
I would be happy to compile a list and post it...do any of you have
any favorites or web sites you would recommend...
Thanks!!!

Here is an exerpt from Cordelia Underwood or the Marvelous Beginnings of
the Moosepath League by Van Reid. I have the Viking Hardback and it
starts on page 178, about halfway into chapter 34. Two bullies pick on a
youngster and a young man watching the whole thing gets the better of one
of the bullies. The whole book is like that and I did read this segment
to a group of senior ladies who were all laughing by the end.
It starts out: The sun continued to assert itself, and soon it held a
substantial portion of the sky. It ends at a section break on page 183.
This is really a great idea and I will look forward to the list.

A loving voice: a caregiver's book of read-aloud stories for the elderly
edited by Carolyn Banks and Janis Rizzo would be a good choice.

I have gotten all the responses to my colleague and she
is utterly delighted!
I will be organizing this list and posting it for the group,
probably over the weekend/early next week.
Thank you all so much!

Robert W. Service ("The Shooting of Dan McGrew," "The Cremation of Sam
Magee"), John Hay ("Jim bludso of the Prairie Belle," etc.), and other
"story-telling" poets might also be enjoyed. Try looking in your Juvenile
section under "ballads" or "story-telling poems." (There's a lovely one
about the Dunkirk Evacuation the title of which I can't recall; the ending
goes something like: "...And close at his side sat Francis Drake,/And held
him true and steered him home.")
