Was in a Borders book store yesterday evening (about 6 pm EST) and they
had O'Dell's book on display with an "Oprah Book" sticker on the cover.

BTW, it sounds like another real downer--doesn't she know that a book
doesn't have to be depressing to be interesting????
Just MHO!

Yes, it tackles some dark and depressing topics (the main character's
mother is in jail for murdering the father, just for starters) but creates
such a heartbreaking and lovable hero, with memorable details, quirks, and
insight that it transcends the gloom of other Oprah picks such as _White
Oleander_.
Imagine a cross between _The Virgin Suicides_, _Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya
Sisterhood_, and _Rocket Boys_ and you start to get the picture.
Don't miss this one just because "everyone else will be reading it". I'm
thrilled the author will be getting such huge exposure for her worthy,
brilliant first novel.
I'd be interested to hear what others think.

A friend recommended _Back Roads_ by Tawni O'Dell before Oprah chose it for
her book club and I can't say enough good things about it.
