But maybe it's not Wylie/Balmer; I don't think the trip to the new
planet (a rogue which has entered the solar system) takes anything
like generations, for instance. If the client is in fact speaking
of three novellas in one book (it's not clear to me either), the
answer might be ORBIT UNLIMITED by Poul Anderson (just a guess from
memory of reviews of the book, which I've not myself read--it's from
circa 1960).

When Worlds Collide by Philip Wylie and the sequel
After Worlds Collide.
I don't know of the third one, but will be waiting to hear what it is so I
