A customer at my bookstore in MD is trying to locate a book. You folks are so
fantastic, I'm sure someone will know the answer to this query. This is all
he gave me.

The book came out early/mid 90s; Washington,D.C. area writer; a mystery based
on The Smithsonian Folklife Festival; reviewed in the Washington Post.
Could this be something by Margaret Truman? I'm stumped.

Hello,

I think this could be "Murder in the Smithsonian" by
Margaret Truman. The book was published in 1983 I
think, but it's worth a try.

The author is most likely Richard Timothy Conroy, but I don't
recall for sure if the book was the India Exhibit or Old Ways
in the New World - I think it was Old Ways.

Could it be Peter Bowen's Gabriel Dupre mystery series? Dupre is a fiddler,
and sometime detective who is invited to play in DC and a mystery
starts...can't recall which secific title...Coyote Wind, Speciman Song,
Wolf, No Wolf, Notches, Thunder Horse. While Bowen is a Montana author and
series is mostly set in Montana...the title set at the Folklife Festival is
a good one!
