This probably is off our purpose of being an RA site but do any of you run
an ongoing booksale at your library of used, donated or withdrawn books? Do
you have to collect tax? Of course I'm dealing with Wisconsin Taxes but I
would like to hear from those of you in other states as well. We had a big
discussion about this today in our marketing meeting and most people were
against it because they thought it would be a hassle. Also does anyone have
a coffee bar or gift shop?So as not to clog up the list you can reply to me directly.
Thanks,

I am the director of a medium sized library in a distant northern suburb of
NYC (about an hour away by car). We have had an on-going booksale, in
addition a one BIG sale once a year. It really is no problem, patrons pay
for the books ($1 for hardcovers, .25 for paperbacks) at the Circ. desk.
Approx. 6,000 people visit the library each week, (we have foot counters on
our security gates). We do not charge any taxes. The books are donated to
the Friends of the Library, a tax-exempt organization, although they do
very little work. Donated books are sorted by librarians, put at the end
of the shelves, (we've got a whole wall) they are then re-shelved in alpha
order by author by a volunteer. We make about $6,000-7,000 on this alone.
For us, it seems worth the effort. We do not have a coffee bar, etc. I
worked in a much larger library that did have a lunch room tea shop. It
was run and managed by other agencies. The library did not share in the
profits, and was generally considered a pain. Hope this helps.

Jeanne, we used to sell withdrawn and donated books in the lobby of the
Duluth Public Library. Our Friends group - a nonprofit organization -
ran it and staffed it. However, due to a change in their membership -
more people working during the day, less time to volunteer - they closed
their little store a few years ago. We no longer sell books on a
continual basis but keep materials for one big sale by the Friends group
in the summer. According to MN law, as it was explained to me and as I
understand it, the Friends are allowed to sell materials and not pay
taxes if the materials are all sold within a 30 day period. The Library has a magazine display rake up by the windows near checkout.
We sell current magazines and do charge tax on each magazine. People
pickup the magazines, go to the Returns or Checkout window and pay for
them. They could just take them if they wanted since the staff does not
monitor the display. The Staff does sort through the periodical
donations we do receive and stock the display. Hope this helps.
