I'm a newcomer here, just found out about fiction_L and am very
excited.
I'm starting to put together a book list of novels with surprising or
provocative endings--something you just don't see coming. A
couple of
examples are the suspense novel "Ritual" by William Heffernan and
"K-PAX"
by Gene Brewer (the latter has quite a provocative ending. I sure
need
help, though. It's harder than I thought it would be to come up with
a
whole book list full. Thanks in advance for any help!

My all time fav for an unexpected or provocative ending is an older title
"Before the glory ended" by Ursula Zilinsky. The story follows the lives
of two upper class cousins, one french, one Hungarian, through the period
just before the first world war to just after the second. The story is
good, but the ending is inspired.

P.S. I would also like to thank the person whose name I have long since
lost, who suggested the book "Pest control" on this list. It was
hilarious. I bought one then another and eventually three copies for our
fairly small library and now recommend it to anyone foolish enough to slow
down as they pass the desk. Most people love it as I did, although there
are a few who get "creeped out" by all the insect references, the down
side of course is that the people who did like it want another book just
like it! Whoever you were many many thanks. Mary
