Novel about Russians who starve?

A patron remembers an inspirational story about a group of Russians who
chose to starve instead of eating the thousands of seeds they had saved to
grow crops in the future. It may have taken place during the siege of
Stalingrad, or maybe WWII, or maybe the '20s or '30s. She is not sure if
she read an entire novel about it or an article.
Does this ring any bells for anyone? Not much to go on, I realize. Thanks
in advance for any leads you can provide.
