Hi,
I would like to add a word of caution about recommending the Mercedes
Lackey books to YAs. A patron became very irate that I would consider
recommending the "books about homosexuals" to his teenage son.
Mercedes Lackey remains one of my favorite fantasy writers. I still
recommend her. However, I try to determine if a patron is homophobic before
recommending her for YA readers.

Regarding books for YA's - How about Anne McCaffrey's THE SHIP WHO SANG?
It's a wonderful series of SF stories. There are also one or two more in
different anthologies.
