This past weekend Harper College (Palatine IL) sponsored its second
annual mystery convention at a hotel in the area. Though aimed primarily
at writers (published and aspiring), my co-worker and I found the
seminars and presentations to be THE MOST INFORMATIVE on the mystery
genre we've ever heard. The conference featured 20+ speakers (authors,
law enforcement personnel, publishing and bookselling people) who not
only gave interesting presentations, but mingled and participated with
the rest of us. From Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, the
conference fee included 2 dinners, 1 lunch, 1 high tea, a mystery theater
presentation, ghost story telling session, and 12 information sessions
(usually with a choice of two programs). Hotel accommodations were
available at additional cost for those who stayed on site. Our conference
packet included 7 raffle tickets - and tickets were drawn at each seminar and
meal for mystery novels (My friend and I each won a book, which we had
autographed by the authors!) Featured speakers this year were Bill Martin
(chief prosecutor in the Richard Speck trial) and Raymond Benson (current
author of the James Bond series) - as well as MANY other (mainly Midwestern)
mystery authors. Publicity began last fall (and we registered in
October). We would highly reccommend this annual event to other advisory
practioners who are interested in learning more about the mystery genre
(and want to have a REALLY GOOD TIME doing so!) I wish I could say I'll
see you all there next year, but I'm afraid Simone and I will have to let
some of the others in our department have a chance to go - maybe the year
after that.....
