I have been going through issues of 'Locus' and have read the 'Science
Fiction Year in Review' articles in the past 2-3 editions of "What Do I
Read Next?" and have gotten my hands on current editions of "Fluent in
Fantasy" and "Anatomy of Wonder". My main problem at this point is how to
narrow the field down to just 25 authors in these 2 genres! Soooooo, I
thought I'd get some suggestions from you fine people out on Fiction_L.
Anyone want to play? Ready, set, go..... And many, many thanks in advance!

William Gibson - Father of Cyberpunk
Arthur C. Clarke - who last I checked was still publishing
In the fantasy field some possibilities are:
Anne McCaffery (but of course)
Mercedes Lackey
Terry Pratchett (the absolute best at parodying the Fantasy field)
Piers Anthony
and perhaps, Neal Gaiman, who started out as a graphic novelist but has
been writing lyrically beautiful novels recently.
Hope this helps!

Here's an interesting little dilemma for yah'll... I need a list of 20-25
science fiction authors (and 20-25 fantasy authors) for what is being
called a 'Hot List of Authors'. This is intended as a list of Current
Authors that should be automatically ordered whenever they have a new book
published. The stipulations for authors to be included (aside from being
popular authors) are that they 'must be alive' and 'still actively writing'
in the specific genre field.

It is a terrible wrench to leave my favorite YA authors off the fantasy list, but I have
limited this to authors of adult fiction.

I would suggest the science fiction/science fiction-romanctic suspense of
Catherine Asaro. She writes for both Tor and Bantam. Recent books are The
Radiant Seas (Tor, November 1999), The Veiled Web (Bantam, December 1999),
Ascendant Sun (Tor, March 2000) and Her Analog Serial, The Quantum Rose, is
due out in hardcover from Tor sometime in 2000.
Binnie Syril Braunstein (romance author/publicist/former librarian)
Baltimore, MD
BTW - I am NOT Catherine's publicist, but we do belong to the same romance
writers group.

mentioned yet.
-All quite popular with my patrons.
Also, a typo in an earlier post - it's Catherine Asaro
I'm glad I don't have to narrow the list down!
