Jeanne,
Could this be Killing Me Softly: a Novel of Obsession by Nicci French,
Mysterious Press, 1999? Scientist falls in love with bad boy mountaineer who
turns out to be worse than she could have ever imagined--obsessive, abusive, and
sadistic. But she doesn't try to leave until it's almost too late.
