I have heard allusions to this story in toney British murder mysteries
from time to time...don't know if there is a novel out there based on this
happening...but a search of NoveList might turn something up.

Alright all you brainy librarians out there...and you know who you
are...I have a good one. A patron wants the name of a book about a priest
who falls in love with a nobleman's daughter. It seems that when their
love is discovered the nobleman has the priest castrated (gulp!) and his
daughter becomes a nun. What were the names of the characters and the
title of the book? The patron believes it was made into a movie. Any help
with this one would be greatly appreciated.
yours,
A. M. Lee

I had a patron yesterday looking for a book about them, but she
had spelled it "Abelard and Hell Low Ease". Hmmmm...

Catherine LeVendeur is a young scholar at the Convent of the
Paraclete, a convent famous for learning and prayer...and its most
famous abbess, the fabled Heloise. Catherine's natural curiosity and
individualism have always set her apart and she has come to the
convent to conquer her sin of pride But service can come in many
forms...A manuscript that the convent produced for the great Abbe
Suger has disappeared and rumors have surfaced that the book
contains sacrilegious passages and will be used to condemn Heloise's
famous lover- Peter Abelard. Catherine must find the manuscript and
discover who has altered the text before it destroys all she holds dear.

To me, this sounds like the classic (true) tale of Heloise and Abelard. See
Benet's Reader's Encyclopedia for a capsule summary under each name.

Someone has almost certainly addressed this question before, but the story
sounds suspiciously like that of Heloise & Abelard to me. I believe that
Helen(?) Waddell wrote a novel about the relationship, though I can't at
this moment remember its title.
