Well, here I am again... third time today. Staff in my library district
are experiencing some confusion about two titles by John Grisham.

One is "Gingerbread Man" with the ISBN 9998843235. The publisher is listed
as Bantam/Doubleday and publication date was supposed to be 4/1/99. Baker
& Taylor lists this title on TitleSource II but says it's not published
yet. Is this an actual title and when will it be published? Is it an
alternate title for one of Grisham's other/earlier books? Is it a
foreign-only publication? We have gotten conflicting information about
this title. Help...

The other title is the serialized novel "A Painted House" to appear in 6
installments in the 'Oxford American Magazine'. I believe there may have
been some discussion about this in November or December on this list but I
do not know what was stated about it. Basically, I would like to know if
there is any 'other' way to access this title other than to subscribe to
the magazine. Will it be compiled later in some format? Can you get the
installments without subscribing? Is the magazine going to be available on
the newstand? Etc.... Anyone have the scoop on this?

"Gingerbread Man" was the title of a screenplay that John Grisham wrote.
The film stars Kenneth Branaugh. Perhaps, the novelization is from the
movie. I hope this helps.

The Painted House will probably be compiled later just like the Green Mile
was done later. But for now you can only get it by buying the magazine. We
have purchased individual copies off the newstand and catalogued them like
books, going out for 7 days. We will do this throughout the year. We did not
wish to subscribe. They have had mild interest with our customers who are
waiting anxiously for The Brethren.

Q - Isn't the Oxford American Grisham's own magazine? Would it be any wonder
he'd choose to serialize there?

Yes, he does own an interest in the magazine. And yes, the first installment is
out. The magazine comes out every other month, and the novel will apparently
continue through all six issues this year. We subscribe to the magazine, but for
the purposes of this novel,we made arrangements with a local bookstore to order
extra copies for us to pick up. We tried Ingram first, because they are listed
as the distributor, but there was some confusion about whether their Serials
Division or Book Division was carrying it. Oh yes, and Grisham is being very coy
and saying the novel may never come out in book form.

This is exactly how we at Cleveland Hts-University Hts solved the problem of
Mr. Grisham's latest attempt at making big money. We do not subscribe to
the magazine either. I posted a photocopy of the cover of the magazine with
instructions on how to place reserves for it. The interest was great when
the New York Times ad came out but has died down now that people see that
they will have to wait several months to read the whole thing.

One of the Sunday morning TV shows did a piece on John Grisham this weekend. "A
Painted House" is an autobiographical novel based in Grisham's childhood. It
is being serialized in a magazine he supports financial called the "Oxford
American". It is published in Oxford, Mississippi (home of my now defunct
library school alma mater).
