I have a patron looking for a romance title that she read years ago. It
was set in the Chicago area, possibly in a town called Pembroke. The story
was about a young lady, (in college?), who marries a young man who is in
the armed forces. He is sent away (to war?) and while he is gone, she
becomes a prostitute. When he returns, she tries to hide this fact from
him. My patron thinks this was written by an African-American author.
