I've looked in all the usual places and have been unable to come up with
discussion questions for Clyde Edgerton's "Walking Across Egypt". Does
anyone have a thought as to where some might be stashed?
thanks,

Walking Across Egypt by Clyde Edgerton
* What do Mattie, the stray dog, and Wesley share in the novel? How do
they all give and receive form one another?
* Think about the use of food in this novel.
* Think about the importance of the community of Listre to the characters
and to the plot.
The following is from http://www.tnliteracy.org/wae3.html
A. Discussion Questions
(1) Why does Mattie take such good care of a dog she is sending to the
pound?
(2) Do you think Mattie cares about what other people think of her? Is it
good, bad, or both?
(3) How does food play a part in this story?
(4) Do you know anyone like Mattie? Describe this person.
(5) How does food play a part in your family?
(6) Why does the author use minor characters? For example, what does Alora
tell you about Mattie?
(7) Can independence be a problem sometimes?
(8) Do people respect and appreciate independence and spunk?
(9) Could Mattie's independence cause her to be an easy victim?
(10) What do you think about Lamar's attitude toward life? Would he be
different if he had a family?
(11) Why do mothers sometimes say too many positive things about a child
(e.g. Mattie's talking about Elaine)?
(12) Does Robert visit his mother out of obligation?
(13) Will Mattie get the dog back?
(14) Do the soaps do what Mattie says on pp. 8&9?
(15) List some specific examples of Mattie's taking pride in her home and
what she has. Is she thankful or boastful? Explain.
(16) Do you think Robert really understands his mother? Cite examples in
the story that support your opinion.
(17) Look at page 1 and give a specific detail that Edgerton uses to let
the reader draw a picture of Mattie in his or her mind.
(18) Is Mattie a church-going woman- or does the reader know for sure?
Cite one or more lines from the story that indicate her
religious connection.
(19) What does Mattie mean by "slowing down"?
(20) Based on the selection you have read, what do you think the phrase
"walking across Egypt" means?
