I have a patron who is looking for a nonfiction book written by a man who
was/or is a sports writer. The book is autobiographical. He's always been
driven to succeed, is adopted, and part of the book is about his search for
his birth parents and his discussions with his adoptive parents about that
search. She thinks the author's first name is Jack.

Any help would be appreciated,

I don't know why, but I think the sportswriter you're seeking might be Frank
DeFord.

I think this is Tim Green's A Man and His Mother: An Adopted Son's Search. Green is a former NFL player, sportscaster and NPR commentator, and novelist.
