Here's an old book with a great girl-lead: "Becky Landers, Frontier
Warrior," by Constance Lindsay Skinner. Becky lives in Daniel Boone's
Kentucky and must take over the role of hunter-provider for her mother and
younger sibs after her father dies and her older brother is carried off by
Shawnees.
