I'm more of a 'lurker' than a participant in this list but I certainly do
enjoy eavesdropping on the great conversations. The discussion of late
about how many books at once, how many by the bedside, etc., reminds me of
my favorite book about reading--"Ruined by Reading" by Sharon Lynne Schwartz.
I was never much of an audiobook enthusiast until I had a job with an hour
commute each day--then I really enjoyed them. Once during that time I
accepted a role in a local community theater at the last minute (just a
couple of weeks of rehearsal) and had to spend all my free time working on
lines and music. I was starved for the narrative that I'm used to living
with from the book or books that I'm always reading; I found that I
treasured that hour of listening each day. My experience also was that I
would listen to books that I would normally never read--biographies and
other non-fiction being one of the genres that I listened to but rarely
read. Now that my commute is only 20 minutes a day I don't listen to books
as much but I do appreciate this format better than I did.
Last summer I was listening to the Harry Potter tapes in the car and was
on the third one when the fourth book came my way. Reading that while
listening to the previous one was confusing! But they both had holds on
them so what could I do?
Best of 2000:
Two that I don't think anyone has mentioned that are on the top of my list
for this year:
"Heartsong of Charging Elk" by Welch--An Oglala Sioux with Buffalo Bill's
Wild West Show gets left behind in Marseilles. Wonderful exploration of the
clash of cultures.
"The Girl with a Pearl Earring" by Chevalier--A maid in Vermeers household
becomes a model for him. Evocation of time period is excellent as is the
development of the heroine's character.
I'll also enthusiastically second the choice of "Second Hand" by Zadoorian.
If you are or have ever been a 'junker' you can't miss this one.
Cheers!
