Not necessarily a "happy holiday" question, but it will make my patron
happy, nonetheless. I have a homebound patron (in her 40s) who is an
avid reader of true crime. She's run through our library's collection,
mostly,
and now I'm trying to add some fiction into the mix. This isn't a genre
I
read widely in, so I'm having some trouble. Can anyone think of some
fiction
that might satisfy a true crime reader?
I've already thought of Patricia Cornwell and Poppy Z. Brite, but are
there
any others?
I'll post a list of responses.
Thanks,

A Perfect Evil by Alex Kava is a first novel that is
based on true cases.
The Whole Truth by Nancy Pickard is written as if
written by a true crime author.
Mortal Fear by Greg Iles
Anything by Thomas Harris or Jeffrey Deaver is gory.

Sorry to be unclear - she would be most interested in
something written like it's true crime. She's interested
in motivations of why people do bad things.

If your patron likes true crime, she should enjoy Ann Rule. There are six
volumes of her Crime Files so far, plus several singleton books, and I
believe I saw a novel recently too.

Try Lowell Cauffiel--he writes nonfiction true crime and also crime
novels. He does intensive research including "psychological insights into
the minds of killers and the human wreckage they leave in their wakes"
(straight from his bio!). He came to our author book fair this year, and
said he was going to stick to fiction from now on because the true crime
was too draining!

Your patron would probably enjoy the Mycroft Holmes series by Quinn
Fawcett; Lord of the Dark Lake by Ron Faust; Freedom and Necessity
(especially the motivation part); and possibly the Jane Whitefield series
by Thomas Perry.
I hope you will compile these for us?

I've compiled a list of responses - it's long (I've included the
bibliography
from Marsha Valance on Legal Mysteries) so I've split it into two parts.
Dates were given if I knew them. If only an author is listed, it can be
assumed
that any of her/his books would be wonderful for a patron looking for
fiction that reads like true crime!
