We have had a few requests for books in Spanish. The demand is small, but
real. Perhaps some of you serving larger Spanish-speaking populations could
recommend about 5 to 10 books that would be good for a public library to
have. We would certainly need no more than that. I will compile a list of
the responses.

In Texas, we have a large Spanish-speaking population. I try to buy some of
the new "Enchanted" line from Harlequin every few months, to keep the
collection current. These are very popular and we just keep them until they
fall apart. We also have most of the classics in Spanish. The problem has
been finding vendors who carry well made books. This problem has gotten
better in recent years, as the Spanish language publishers have moved into
the U.S. market (at least down here) with a vengeance. I recommend a press
out of El Paso (Cinco Puntos Press) for bi-lingual children's mterial.

Candice,

We have had a Spanish collection for over a year now. I assume you're
looking for fiction recommendations. Here they are:

1. The books that go out most are Hispanic authors such as Cisneros,
Esquivel, Emilio Carballido, Fanny Buitrago and Esmeralde Santiago.

2. Romances by Delinsky, Lindsey, Bradford. Danielle Steel isn't as
popular, but I suspect it's because she's on a lower shelf.

3. Stephen King and authors teens enjoy. If you have a particular
classic the schools use (Ours is To Kill A Mockingbird) you might look for
those as well.

I would recommend contacting Noemi Garza, Director of the Edinburg Publlic
Library in Edinburg, Texas, for her thoughts or Children's Librarian Letty
Leija. I used to work with these two librarians. They are both excellent.
Edinburg had an LSCA grant to enhance their Spanish language collection back
in 1994-1995. Therefore, they would be an excellent source.
