I promise not to post this many requests in one day frequently, but I am
stuck on finding a book for one of my patrons.

The information that she gave me was:

title: Early afternoon in the garden of good and evil.
author: John Berendt.

She really means this title (I immediately thought she meant "Midnight in
the garden of good and evil") and I can't find a reference to the book
anywhere. I have tried BOP, BIP, Amazon (and all of the other major
booksellers) and the few print sources that I have available. If possible,
can anyone provide an ISBN so I can interlibrary loan it?

I really, really appreciate the help.

Funny you should ask! I just unearthed while filing some accumulated
miscellany the source for this request. About a year ago (early January
2000 I believe, although there is no date on this page of the section), the
Endpaper in the New York Times Book Review did a mock bestseller list for
the year 2020. It looks absolutely authentic but the entries are howlingly
funny (read the small print especially for a real insider laugh at the
publishing company names...). The title you cite shows up at number 4 on
the Non-Fiction list, with the description "nothing ever seems to happen in
sleepy Savannah, GA." If your patron saw a copy of this list floating
around somewhere, s/he may well have not realized it was a joke. Other
ersatz bestsellers on the list include "Harry Potter and the Initial Public
Offering, " "Dave Barry Turns 70," and "X is For Xylophones that Fall Out of
the Sky anbd Land on People, Killing Them" by Sue Grafton. Anyone who did
not see this when it came out should make an effort to find a copy, even if
it means resorting to your microfilm archives!

the NYT Book Review from storage I found that the periodicals librarian had

I would just like to remind everyone that the 2020 Bestsellers list "2020
Foresight Best-Sellers" by Margalit Fox can be found in the New York Times
Book Review, January 2, 2000; section 7, page 23.

If it's not available at your library, it could be obtained via ILL. I would
think, that, since the material is copyrighted, it would be the best thing
to do.
