Do you have any suggestions for authors and titles? I don't read this type
of book so I used mostly Novelist and "What Do I Read Next? for suggestions.

Neither of these have much history but I loved YA-YA SISTERHOOD and
also loved these two books. Another one that might be a stretch but
has the same friendship elements is WAITING TO EXHALE by Terry
McMillan.

I have a patron who filled out a Reader's Advisory form. She would
like
suggestions of what books to read. One of her favorite books is
DIVINE
SECRETS OF THE YA-YA SISTERHOOD. She likes some humor and the
friendship
of the four main characters in that book hit close to home. She also
mentions that she likes to learn about other cultures and she likes
when there
is history in a novel. She also says she doesn't "want to always read
the
same author or type of book." I have come up with some authors which
I think
might appeal to her:
Sandra Dallas
Elizabeth Berg
Gail Godwin
Maeve Binchy
Anita Brookner
Sheila Bosworth
Ellen Gilchrist
Fannie Flagg
Alice Hoffman.

For your patron who said she likes to learn about other cultures and who
likes a little history in her novels, Barbara Wood has written three novels
that fit the bill. All three have strong female characters and are rich in
period details. The first, Green City in the Sun deals with a woman doctor
and the settling of Kenya in the early 1900's. The second, The Dreaming is
set in Australia in the 1870's and brings that country's fascinating
Aboriginal culture to life. The third, Virgins of Paradise is set in
post-war Cairo, Egypt and teaches much about women and the middle eastern
culture. >>
Barbara Wood also wrote Domina, another strong book, historical, with a woman
doctor as the heroine, if memory serves. Also, if your patron doesn't mind
sensuality, I can recommend several books by Elizabeth Lowell. Tell Me No
Lies is set against the discovery of the terracotta soldiers in the People's
Republic of China. AMber Beach revolves around the fabled amber room that
was dismantled and spirited when the Bolsheviks overthrew the Romanoffs. And
Jade Island includes intrigues about jade at its heart, including a complete
jade suit of armor. I just saw a ptrogram on mummification on cable TV last
week; that jade suit of armor was featured. And I knew right away that if
not for reading Elizabeth Lowell's book, I'd never have heard of it. She's
also written a novel set against the background of the Anasazi ruins in the
American southwest, but I don't remember the title. Loved the book at the
time, though. All of the above were "keepers."
