Does anyone know this book? Set in New York (or San Francisco -- patron
wasn't sure). The sleuth thinks of herself as an actress first, amateur
detective second. Patron thinks there are several in a series. The
actress(who never seems to get a part)/dectective is the daughter of a
former police officer and is recently divorced from the son of a Mafia
head. She has a protective gay friend, and in this fairly recent story, an
older woman friend dies unexpectedly.

this sounds so much like Robert Parkers new mystery series - except the
woman is an artist not an actress- the rest is all the same -- mafia ex,
gay protective friend...title of the book is FAMILY HONOR

This sounds to me like a Sunny Randall mystery by Robert B. Parker.
I've only read one, and this doesn't sound like the plot, but Sunny
is the daughter of a police officer and divorced from a man who's
family is in the mob.

Certain elements of this book (a private investigator who is the daughter
of a police officer; divorced from a man who is the son of a Mafia guy; has
a gay friend who is an important part of her life) sound like Robert B.
Parker's book Family Honor, his first book about Sunny Randall. She is an
artist in her spare time, and she lives in Boston.

While there certainly are several elements that sound like Parker's latest
(1st in the series) book, this isn't it unless the patron has some other
details wrong. Not actress, no older woman friend dying.

Maybe Lydia Adamson's Alice Nestleton series? It's set in NY, and Alice is
an actress/sleuth.

Another series of mysteries where a New York actress solves crimes is
written by Jane Dentinger. As far as I know the actress was not previously
married to someone connected to the Mafia.

Parts of this sound like Family Honor by Robert Parker. The heroine is the daughter of a police officer, divorced from the son of an organized criminal, not mafia though, and has a protective gay friend. It is set in Boston. the parts that don't match are the actress job and the older woman dying. It might be worth looking at the parker book to see if it fits the bill.
