I just had a question from a patron that needs the help of this list
because it's too hard for me! The patron is a French lady who is here
for a few years with her family, including children. She has been here
two years now and feels that her English is good enough to read books
where the language is not too complicated. (She speaks English well but
slowly.) She has read many children's books recommended by our
children's librarian, but now wants to read a selection of adult books
that are representative of our culture. I think she wants to read some
classics but also a selection of more recent books that Americans enjoy
reading. She has read and enjoyed Angela's Ashes, Paul Auster, Willa
Cather, Nordine Gordimer, Ruth Rendell, and P.D. James. She enjoys
mysteries but really wants to read a wide variety to become familiar
with what Americans are reading. I started her out on a Sue Grafton and
a Louise Mott Davidson mystery because I'm most familiar with mysteries
and these are so popular and also easy reading. I don't want to
overwhelm her with titles so hope to get together a good list of really
appropriate titles that isn't too intimidating to her but is helpful.
Thanks in advance for any help.Kathy Kelly, Librarian
