Hello all you incredibly helpful people on Fiction L. My name is Pat from
library reference in Frederick County, MD and I have been lurking since
October, just waitng for a stumper for you. Today a patron asked me for
an out of print book she thinks is entitled "The Black Swan" about a
woman's account of her life under the Mao regime. She thinks the author's
name is Chien or Chen and that the book is an autobiography. I cannot
find anything remotely like that under that title, hope you can help!..

I wonder if it might be _Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China_, by Jung
Chang. It's a nonfiction book about three generations of women in China,
and part of the book is set during the Mao regime.

Another possibility is RED AZALEA by Anchee Min. this autobiography
chronicles the life of a young woman during the days of the Cultural
Revolution. We used it for a book discussion and it was well received. The
author now lives in the US.

Read a biography called Beyond the Narrow Gate by Leslie Chang.
Autobiography about her mother and three friends growing up under Mao. May
be the one. After reading it I recommended it for several patrons.
Everyone has enjoyed it. Saw her interviewed on Book Notes on C-span with
in the last year.
