Does anybody recognize this novel or short story? Patron thinks the
author's name is something like "Samantha Ramara"--but on closer
questioning, all she's sure of is that the author's last name sounded
Indian. In the 50s and 60s, the author wrote pieces for the New Yorker.

A Baptist missionary goes to Japan, but she never gets any converts
because she's too inflexible. She doesn't understand the Japanese and
keeps trying to make them be like her.

I know that's not much...

There was a woman writer named Santha Rama Rau writing in the 60's and
70's. THe titles we have are non fiction but she did write for the New
Yorker too, perhaps she is your author.
