An idea that I've heard, but haven't tried yet, is to pick a specific event
or time in history and let the members of the group pick their own books -
the discussion is then on the historical event, how it was perceived by the
different authors, and most likely how it the same event can be so treated
so differently from different points of view.

Another idea is to choose a style of writing, such as diaries or
correspondence, have each member read a different book and then look for
similarities & differences and discuss the strength of writing in such a
style (and how the books may or may not have worked in that style).
