One of the librarians here is looking for early
picture books. We are not sure how far back "picture
books" go. They definitely weren't called picture
books years agao nor do I remember the term "chapter
books" from my youth but that is the term the kids use
now to differentiate. The farthest back she has found
is Suess but she was wondering if there were "picture
books" in the 30's. Any thoughts?

Some early picture book artists:
Wanda Gag (late 1920s-30s)
Millions of Cats
The Funny Thing
The ABC Bunny
Jean De Brunhoff (1930s):
The Babar the Elephant books
Hans Augusto Rey (1940's)
Curious George books
Ludwig Bemelmans(late 30s-40s)
Madeline books
Robert Lawson (1930s)
The Story of Ferdinand
Vuirginia Lee Burton (30s-60s)
The Little House
Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel
Katy and the Big Snow
The 40s and 50s were quite prolific Marcia Brown, Dr. Seuss, Keats,
Lionni,
Thatcher Hurd/Margaret Wise Brown, etc.
Earlier picture books tend to be illustrated fables, nursery rhymes and
other poetry, fairy tales, Bible stories, etc.
Hope this helps.
